about Lambs Academy
What is the ‘Lambs Soccer Academy’?
Lambs Academy is a series of developmental programs throughout the year for girls ages 8-13. It is run by the Women’s Soccer Coaches at the University of Rhode Island, with assistance from players on the URI Women’s Soccer Team. The program was started in the Fall of 2007.
Who are the coaches?
Zac Shaw – Head Women’s Soccer Coach at the University of Rhode Island.... NSCAA 1st Team All-American in college...played professionally in Belgium and in the U.S.... has coached at Penn State, University of Wisconsin, University of Florida, and WUSA (former professional league).
Jen Frisch – Assistant Women’s Soccer Coach at the University of Rhode Island.... Regional All-American at Central Connecticut State University... has coached several girls teams with the Connecticut Football Club (CFC).
Emily Shaw – Assistant Women’s Soccer Coach at the University of Rhode Island... 3x 1st Team All-American at Penn State and played for US Women’s National Team and professionally in the WUSA.
What is the program’s philosophy?
We are dedicated to providing one of the best early player development programs in New England and have designed a curriculum that will both challenge and inspire young players. Our priorities are providing comprehensive development from basic skills to offensive and defensive tactics in a fun, safe, learning environment. Sessions will be Individual Skill Development Focused and centered around Small Sided Games. A portion of the proceeds from the Academy will go to help support the University of Rhode Island Women's Soccer program.
What does a typical session include?
A major focus of the program is on improving individual foot skills and technique (passing/receiving, familiarity with the ball at their feet, dribbling. shooting, etc) and teaching the girls ball mastery exercises that they can take with them and do on their own to become the best player possible. We also play a variety of small-sided games to goal in order to teach basic attacking and defending tactics. And, of course, shooting games! We believe that playing small-sided games to goal, where the girls get lots of touches on the ball and lots of goal-scoring opportunities, is an excellent and enjoyable way to become a better player!
What sessions are available throughout the year?
1. Winter Lambs Academy: 1/21, 1/28, 3/4, 3/11, 3/16, 3/25. 5:30-6:30 pm (Limit 30 girls)
2. Spring Lambs Academy: will take place during April Vacation, Mon April 19 – Thurs April 22, 2010. 9 am – 12 pm. (Limit 60 girls)
3. Summer Lambs Academy: will take place Monday June 28 - Thursday July 1, 9 am – 12 pm. (Limit 60 girls)
4. Fall Lambs Academy: TBD
Why only girls? Why ages 8-13?
As the Women’s Soccer coaches at the University of Rhode Island, we are interested in developing girls soccer in the state of Rhode Island. We feel that the camps that are for girls only create the best learning environment for them, where they feel free to try out new things, and get to compete with their teammates and friends. We limit the ages to 8-13 – while we do split up the girls into groups by age/ability for some parts of the academy we want to create a comfortable learning environment by not having a large age gap between players overall. We are not interested in having 8 year olds and 18 year olds at the same camp.
Why do you limit the # of girls?
In order to ensure adequate player/coach ratio and sufficient field space, we limit enrollment for each academy. Spaces are open unless otherwise posted on our website. The quality of our academy and ensuring that each player has a fun and successful time at the camp is more important to us than simply getting numbers.
Where does everything take place?
All of the academies will take place at the University of Rhode Island. Spring, Summer, and Fall Lambs Academy will take place at the new training complex of the URI Women’s Soccer team, located on Plains Rd.. Winter Lambs will take place in one of the indoor facilities at URI.
What’s with the name?
Since the URI Women’s Soccer Team is the ‘Rams’, we named our Academy the “Lambs” as in ‘little Rams’ or ‘Rams in training’.
How do I learn more?
Contact Emily Shaw, URI Women’s Soccer Assistant Coach, at emily@uri.edu or 401-207-1617.
